TikTok Adds Songwriter Tag and Tab to Artist Profiles
TikTok has launched two new features to highlight songwriters on its platform: a dedicated “Songwriter” tag and a new profile tab that showcases their music contributions. These updates aim to enhance visibility and discoverability for music creators whose work often goes unrecognized in short-form video content.
According to TikTok’s official announcement, the tools are available through a limited beta to select songwriter-publishing partners. Others can request early access by joining the waitlist through the platform’s new onboarding process.
This rollout reflects TikTok’s ongoing efforts to support musicians at every stage, and especially the individuals behind the lyrics and compositions that often go viral.
Informed by Industry Insights
The decision to build songwriter-specific tools was shaped by internal data and an external study commissioned by TikTok. According to TikTok’s newsroom post, over 870 songwriters were surveyed, with a majority expressing the need for more control over how their work is displayed and credited.
More notably, over 50% of songwriters using social platforms for self-promotion identified TikTok as their primary channel, underscoring the platform’s unique role in music discovery and creator marketing.
“TikTok allows songwriters to highlight their musical works alongside personal content,” said Ole Obermann, TikTok’s Global Head of Music Business Development. “It helps them tell stories about their music and their craft.”
Industry Landscape: Catching Up to Spotify and Tidal
While Spotify has offered songwriter pages and credit displays for years, and Tidal launched tools for royalty tracking and metadata transparency in 2024, TikTok had yet to offer comparable visibility for composers—until now.
This update helps TikTok strengthen its value proposition in the broader music ecosystem, giving creators more control over how their songs are presented within viral trends and user-generated content.
“TikTok for Artists” and the Bigger Strategy
This launch follows the 2025 debut of TikTok for Artists, a performance insights dashboard that allows musicians to analyze trends, track audience engagement, and optimize song releases.
Together with the new songwriter features, TikTok is building a robust backend ecosystem—without needing a dedicated music streaming arm, which was shuttered when TikTok Music shut down in late 2024.
These moves show TikTok’s clear intent: to become a core platform for music growth, without being a direct Spotify competitor.
